H. 4577

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND TO NAPOLEON BROWN CULP A WARM WELCOME TO THE PALMETTO STATE, HIS ADOPTED HOME, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS VISIT TO CHAPIN HIGH SCHOOL IN CELEBRATION OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH AND TO WISH HIM WELL DURING HIS VISIT AND PERFORMANCE.

Whereas, born in Charlotte, North Carolina, on October 12, 1929, Napoleon Brown Culp first sang as a youth in several Gospel groups, which showcased his large and mellifluous voice; and

Whereas, he first signed with Savoy Records in 1954, using the stage name of Nappy Brown, and became popular with his energetic and entertaining stage presence; and

Whereas, on August 24, 2002, Nappy Brown was included in the Blues Hall of Fame as his music, widely appreciated with its rich melisma, broad vibrato, and the use of his distinctive "li-li-li-li-li," had broadened to include rhythm and blues; and

Whereas, on February 15, 2008, Nappy Brown will regale Chapin High School students with his wide-ranging talents and his life story in celebration of Black History Month. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, extend to Napoleon Brown Culp a warm welcome to the Palmetto State, his adopted home, upon the occasion of his visit to Chapin High School in celebration of Black History Month and to wish him well during his visit and performance.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Napoleon Brown Culp.
