 AND THEORIES ON RACIAL IDENTITY, AND TO RECOGNIZE HER PRESENTATION IN HONOR OF
 AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH, ENTITLED RACIAL IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT IN
 SOCIETY, TO BE GIVEN AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA ON FEBRUARY 22, 2008.

TO COMMEND DR. JANET E. HELMS FOR HER PIONEERING RESEARCH AND THEORIES ON RACIAL IDENTITY, AND TO RECOGNIZE HER PRESENTATION IN HONOR OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH, ENTITLED RACIAL IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT IN SOCIETY, TO BE GIVEN AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA ON FEBRUARY 22, 2008.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives take pleasure in welcoming renowned racial identity theorist, educator, and researcher Dr. Janet Helms to the Palmetto State to present a distinguished lecture; and

Whereas, Dr. Helms is the Augustus Long Professor of Counseling Psychology and director of the Institute for the Study and Promotion of Race and Culture at Boston College. She also is a fellow in Counseling Psychology and Ethnic Diversity of the American Psychological Association; and

Whereas, a representative to the American Psychological Association's governing body, she also is its representative to the joint committee on testing and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Psychological Assessment and the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development; and

Whereas, Dr. Helms has written sixty theoretical and empirical articles and four books on the topics of racial identity and cultural influences on assessment and counseling practice, including A Race Is a Nice Thing To Have, written with Donelda Cook, and Using Race and Culture in Counseling and Psychotherapy: Theory and Process; and

Whereas, in 1991, Dr. Helms became the first recipient of the annual Janet E. Helms Award for Mentoring and Scholarship in Professional Psychology, inaugurated in her honor by Columbia University Teachers College; and

Whereas, she has received a myriad of awards in acknowledgement of her work, including an engraved brick in Iowa State University's Plaza of Heroines, the Distinguished Career Contributions to Research Award from the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues, and the Leona Tyler Award for a distinguished research career from the American Psychological Association's Society of Counseling Psychology; and

Whereas, Dr. Helms received the 2007-2008 Distinguished Psychologist Award presented by the Association of Black Psychologists; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives welcome Dr. Janet E. Helms, renowned pioneer of research and theories on racial identity, and express their gratitude for her presentation in this beloved State in honor of African American History Month. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend Dr. Janet E. Helms for her pioneering research and theories on racial identity, and recognize her presentation in honor of African American History Month, entitled Racial Identity Development in Society, to be given at the University of South Carolina on February 22, 2008.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Janet E. Helms.
