H. 4916

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR LUCIUS ERVIN, OF HAMPTON COUNTY, A LONG-TIME EMPLOYEE AT ESTILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AND COMMEND THE EXAMPLE HE SETS FOR THE STUDENTS AT ESTILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives take great pride in Lucius Ervin, born in Estill, for his outstanding life accomplishments; and

Whereas, he moved with his parents to Jersey City, New Jersey, when he was eight years old, and at fourteen, he began boxing to emulate Henry Herley, one of his neighborhood heroes who had made the United States Olympic boxing team; and

Whereas, by the time Lucius Ervin was sixteen, he had won twenty-nine amateur boxing bouts and lost only six, and he had already won his first lightweight title; and

Whereas, by age seventeen, the 135-pound lightweight had turned professional and had begun a career that included thirty-two wins, some at Madison Square Garden, eight losses, and two draws, and at one point he was ranked the sixth lightweight boxer in the world; and

Whereas, under the names Cool Hand Luke, Butcher Boy, and The Bayonne Buzzsaw, Lucius Ervin won two lightweight championships and the opportunity to box for the World Lightweight belt; and

Whereas, for nine years of his boxing career, Lucius Ervin worked full time at a factory for Mueller's Macaroni in New Jersey and operated a security agency part time to provide for his loving wife Veronica and their seven children; and

Whereas, as the well-known and respected custodian at Estill Elementary School, he genuinely cares for the students as he teaches them to respect their school, study hard, and follow their dreams; and in turn they love and respect him; and

Whereas, his accomplishments have earned him a spotlight in the Estill Elementary School's annual Black History Month Assembly as well as feature articles in the Hampton and Augusta newspapers; and

Whereas, to celebrate the achievements and contributions of this wonderful man, he will be honored as a "Hometown Hero" at a dinner to be held in his honor on April 11, 2008, at Estill High School; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives admire the life and accomplishments of Lucius Ervin and express their appreciation for the role model he sets for the students of Estill Elementary School. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Lucius Ervin, of Hampton County, a long-time employee at Estill Elementary School, and commend the example he sets for the students at Estill Elementary School.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Lucius Ervin.
