A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND JOYCE DIXON LAWHORNE, OF OCONEE COUNTY, UPON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT, FOR AN EXEMPLARY CAREER OF SERVICE AT OCONEE MEDICAL CENTER, AND TO WISH HER SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives note with gratitude that Joyce Dixon Lawhorne has served the citizens of Gaffney and Walhalla as a registered nurse for thirty-four years; and

Whereas, born in Kingsport, Tennessee, on May 21, 1954, Joyce Ann Dixon moved with her parents, the late Catherine Patrick Dixon and William Perry Dixon, and two sisters to the Greenville area when she was very young; and

Whereas, at Woodruff High School, Joyce participated in many school activities such as cheerleading and beauty pageants, and after graduation she pursued a degree in nursing at Gardner-Webb College in Boiling Springs, North Carolina; and

Whereas, in college, she met Larry Lawhorne, who would become her beloved husband on August 11, 1973, and together they raised three fine children, Shannon, Christy, and Timothy; and

Whereas, while her children were young, she volunteered as room mother in their schools and as a Sunday school and Bible school teacher at their home church, First Baptist Church of Walhalla; and

Whereas, they lived two years in Gaffney before moving to Walhalla where Joyce Lawhorne spent the next thirty-two years at Oconee Medical Center as a staff nurse, head nurse, nurse manager, and department head; and

Whereas, she has shared her expertise in infection control through programs which she has presented locally, statewide, and nationally, and her articles have been published in professional journals on the state and national level; and

Whereas, a member of the Palmetto Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Joyce Lawhorne has held numerous offices, including president and vice president, and her superior work has been honored as she was twice selected South Carolina Infection Control Practitioner of the Year; and

Whereas, in her retirement, Joyce plans to enjoy her hobbies of counted cross-stitching, gardening various flowers from her husband's three greenhouses, and above all camping in state parks, especially Hunting Island State Park; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that Joyce Dixon Lawhorne will begin a much-deserved retirement from nursing on April 18, 2008. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and commend Joyce Dixon Lawhorne, of Oconee County, upon the occasion of her retirement, for an exemplary career of service at Oconee Medical Center, and wish her success and happiness in all her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Joyce Dixon Lawhorne.
