A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MRS. INEZ MAUDE KEITH CAROLINA OF GEORGETOWN COUNTY ON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND CONTINUED HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are delighted to learn that Mrs. Inez Maude Keith Carolina will celebrate her one hundredth birthday on July 10, 2010; and

Whereas, Mrs. Carolina was born on July 6, 1910, just a few years after the dawn of the twentieth century, and she has been witness to nearly all the incredible changes and developments that have come to this nation from that time into the twenty-first century; and

Whereas, the daughter of Heyward and Sarah Wragg Keith, she grew up with ten siblings and graduated from Howard High School on June 3, 1932; and

Whereas, Mrs. Carolina taught school for a term in 1933 before deciding to begin the nurses training program at McClennan Banks Hospital and Training School for Nurses in Charleston. She graduated from the program in 1936; and

Whereas, on December 10, 1938, at the height of Jim Crow segregation, she bravely put pen to paper and passed the South Carolina State Board for Registered Nurses; and

Whereas, a devoted wife and mother, she married James Arthur Carolina, Sr. on September 19, 1938, and together they were blessed by two adoring sons, Hiram Everett Carolina and James Arthur Carolina, Jr. Mrs. Carolina is also the doting grandmother to four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, a true social activist, she was present at the historical march on Washington in August 1963 and was present during the iconic "I Have a Dream" speech delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She also insisted that African-American nurses be considered for advanced training, which allowed those nurses to bear the "certified" title; and

Whereas, undertaking an extensive forty-year career in nursing, Mrs. Carolina specialized in many areas of the hospital and most impressively worked in neurology, assisting craniotomies and other brain surgeries; and

Whereas, in addition to her nursing career, Mrs. Carolina selflessly gave of her time and talents as a volunteer with the Red Cross blood drive; and

Whereas, Mrs. Carolina has been a faithful member of Bethel AME Church, where she has served as a senior missionary, member of Board #7, and a member of the United Order of Tent. Believing in prayer and the love of God, she is an avid bible reader and her favorite scripture is Psalms 23; and

Whereas, she attributes her longevity to eating fresh foods, drinking lots of water and juices, refraining from smoking and strong spirits, and maintaining regular scheduled doctor's appointments; and

Whereas, the Senate is proud to honor this truly lovely lady at the celebration of her one hundredth birthday and joins with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Mrs. Inez Maude Keith Carolina of Georgetown County on the occasion of her one hundredth birthday and wish her a joyous birthday celebration and continued health and happiness.
