 Aiken County who died April 25, 1994.

A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SENATE TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS AND ADMIRERS OF MR. JOHN E. CUMBEE OF AIKEN COUNTY WHO DIED APRIL 25, 1994.

Whereas, Mr. John E. Cumbee of Aiken County died April 25, 1994; and

Whereas, Mr. Cumbee was born on a farm close by the South Edisto River in Aiken County; and

Whereas, his life has been entwined with Mt. Calvary Church since his birth in 1927 when the country church began upstream from the Cumbee farm. He was baptized there, he went to Sunday school, church, and youth group there, and for many years he served in almost every lay capacity. He taught an adult Bible class, had served as church treasurer, and was a member of the Church Council; and

Whereas, Ridge peach orchardist Kester Derrick, a past chairman of the Church Council, said of Mr. Cumbee, "John was a lifelong, loyal friend to our family and also a lifetime member of Mt. Calvary Church, which he served with dedication, giving of his time and talent in all capacities. He will be missed"; and

Whereas, as a youth Mr. Cumbee entered the Army during World War II. He returned from service and attended Augusta Junior College. He then entered the University of South Carolina Law School, where he graduated with honors; and

Whereas, in 1951 he joined the Savannah River Operations Office of the United States Atomic Energy Commission. He became deputy chief counsel and succeeded to the position of chief counsel in 1972; and

Whereas, former Savannah River Operations Office Manager Nat Stetson described Mr. Cumbee as "a very kind man and very efficient. He was a nice person to work with"; and

Whereas, after retiring from federal service in 1983, Mr. Cumbee served as hearing officer for the Department of Energy's personnel security cases and also as legal consultant to the Du Pont Company in its procurement and subcontracting operations; and

Whereas, he also conducted a number of hearings on environmental issues for the Department of Energy and was highly respected for his keen intellect and his sense of fairness; and

Whereas, Mr. Cumbee held many honors during his lifetime. At the University of South Carolina, he was a member of Wig and Robe, Omicron Delta Kappa honorary leadership fraternity, Phi Delta Phi, and the South Carolina Law Review. He was a charter member and is the current president of the Federal Bar Association and is a past president of the Torch Club of Augusta; and

Whereas, Mr. Cumbee had been an active supporter and former chairman of the Coalition to Assist Abused Persons. He had been very influential in the coalition's purchase of a shelter home to temporarily house victims of domestic violence; and

Whereas, Mr. Cumbee was a devoted family man, a husband, and the father of three sons. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate express their deepest sympathy to the family and many friends and admirers of Mr. John E. Cumbee of Aiken County who died April 25, 1994.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Cumbee family.
