 FOR ITS MANY YEARS OF SERVICE TO ITS COMMUNITY.

TO CONGRATULATE THE REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER OF ORANGEBURG UPON THE OCCASION OF ITS ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY AND TO COMMEND THE CENTER FOR ITS MANY YEARS OF SERVICE TO ITS COMMUNITY.

Whereas, with a rich and storied history, The Regional Medical Center originated in August of 1919 as a small, private hospital on East Glover Street. It was established by Dr. Charles A. Mobley, who understood the need for a new hospital to serve the patients and families of Orangeburg; and

Whereas, a few months later, Dr. Mobley obtained a state charter to open a nursing school. Four students began training in the first class, and two graduated thirty-six months later; and

Whereas, in 1933, the Tri-County Hospital Association was organized and was granted a charter to acquire and operate a hospital in the city of Orangeburg. Three years later, the city assumed responsibility for the hospital, and construction of a new facility began; and

Whereas, the new facility opened on Carolina Avenue on August 19, 1937, with eighty-two employees and a capacity of one hundred beds; and

Whereas, in 1951, the hospital's name changed to Orangeburg Regional Hospital to more adequately reflect its role as a regional referral center serving more than three counties; and

Whereas, a decade later, H. Filmore Mabry accepted the position of chief executive officer and continued in this role for almost thirty-two years; and

Whereas, by 1979, the hospital had started providing general acute care to a five-county region, leading Calhoun County to became a joint owner. Soon after, groundbreaking ceremonies were held for a new twenty-six million dollar facility to be built on a sixty-acre tract on St. Matthews Road; and

Whereas, during the 1990s and leading into the new century, the hospital, now named The Regional Medical Center, experienced accelerated growth in technology and state-of-the-art equipment and made unwavering commitments to community outreach and health and wellness; and

Whereas, The Regional Medical Center has today grown into a full-service health system with a 286-bed acute care hospital, twenty-three primary and specialty care practices, and a new, freestanding emergency department in Denmark; and

Whereas, The Regional Medical Center is now the largest employer in the region with more than 1,500 dedicated employees; and

Whereas, the people of The Regional Medical Center, past and present, have devoted themselves to providing compassionate, quality health care to everyone, every day; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate greatly appreciates the service of The Regional Medical Center to its surrounding community and the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate The Regional Medical Center of Orangeburg upon the occasion of its one hundredth anniversary and commend the center for its many years of service to its community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to The Regional Medical Center.
