A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE CITADEL ON THE OBSERVANCE OF ITS SESQUICENTENNIAL.

Whereas, The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, was created on December 20, 1842, by the General Assembly; and

Whereas, initially the institution was known as the Citadel Academy in Charleston but has been known officially as The Citadel since 1910; and

Whereas, The Citadel has educated and trained young men in the South Carolina Corps of Cadets as leaders from all walks of life for the State of South Carolina and the nation for 150 years; and

Whereas, graduates of the institution have made their mark on a broad spectrum of professions for fifteen decades, becoming college and university presidents, doctors, teachers, lawyers, corporate executives, military commanders, mayors, legislators, ambassadors, governors, and United States senators; and

Whereas, The Citadel has figured prominently in the development of the nation's military preparedness and the strength of America's national defense; and

Whereas, this outstanding educational institution so rich in character and tradition is highly deserving of recognition on its sesquicentennial observance, 1842-1992. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates The Citadel on the observance of its sesquicentennial.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the chairman of the Board of Visitors of The Citadel and to the institution's president.
