A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
EXPRESSING THE SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE
GENERAL ASSEMBLY AT THE DEATH OF ELIZABETH
BOATWRIGHT COKER, AND EXTENDING SYMPATHY TO HER
FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, Elizabeth Boatwright Coker, known as "South Carolina's
First Lady of Letters", died September 1, 1993, at the age of
eighty-five; and
Whereas, Mrs. Coker was a native of Darlington County and was an
outstanding novelist, having written nine novels, the last one being
The Grasshopper King (1981); and
Whereas, she taught creative writing at a number of institutions of
higher education, including Converse College, Appalachian State
University, and Coker College, was inducted into the South Carolina
Academy of Authors in 1991 in Charleston, and possessed an
exuberance for living that was truly infectious; and
Whereas, the death of this outstanding, remarkable lady is a great loss
for the State of South Carolina, but her gifts as a writer will constitute
an everlasting legacy to the people of her native state as well as to
countless others. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this
resolution, expresses sorrow at the death of Elizabeth Boatwright Coker
and extends sympathy to her family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs.
Coker's family.
