A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 2-1-217 SO AS TO LIMIT THE TERMS OF MEMBERS OF STATE BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS APPOINTED BY THE GOVERNOR OR ELECTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND PROVIDE FOR EXCEPTIONS TO AND THE OPERATION OF THE PROVISIONS.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 2-1-217. No person may be appointed by the Governor or elected by the General Assembly to a state board or commission who has served two successive full terms or eight successive years, whichever is longer, on such board or commission. However, this limitation does not prevent a person from being elected or appointed to another state board or commission. This section does not apply to life members of the Clemson University Board of Trustees. Persons currently serving on these boards or commissions whose tenure exceeds the two-term or eight-year limitation are permitted to complete their current term."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect July 1, 1995.
