A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE GREATER COLUMBIA ALUMNI CHAPTER OF
ALLEN UNIVERSITY ON ITS "FIRST FAMILY AND FRIENDS BANQUET", MAY 2, 1997, AND
WELCOMING CONGRESSMAN FLOYD H. FLAKE OF NEW YORK, THE BANQUET'S GUEST SPEAKER
AND DISTINGUISHED NATIONAL LEADER AND CHAMPION OF CAUSES FOR THE
DISADVANTAGED.

04/30/97 Senate Introduced, adopted, returned with concurrence SJ-6
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
RECOGNIZING THE GREATER COLUMBIA ALUMNI
CHAPTER OF ALLEN UNIVERSITY ON ITS "FIRST FAMILY
AND FRIENDS BANQUET", MAY 2, 1997, AND WELCOMING
CONGRESSMAN FLOYD H. FLAKE OF NEW YORK, THE
BANQUET'S GUEST SPEAKER AND DISTINGUISHED
NATIONAL LEADER AND CHAMPION OF CAUSES FOR THE
DISADVANTAGED.
Whereas, Representative Floyd H. Flake of the United States House
of Representatives from New York State's Sixth Congressional
District (Queens, New York) will be the guest speaker at the "First
Family and Friends Banquet" sponsored by the Greater Columbia
Alumni Chapter of Allen University; the event is scheduled for
Friday, May 2, 1997, at 7:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Hotel and
Conference Center in Columbia; and
Whereas, this is a historic occasion in support of Allen University
and attendance is expected to be large; and
Whereas, Congressman Flake will certainly be an outstanding
speaker for this important event; he is highly distinguished and
regarded; he was elected to the United States House of
Representatives in 1986, and, prior to his seating in the 99th
Congress, he had neither held nor sought any other elective office; his
election represented a grassroots effort to bring greater focus and
understanding of America's urban agenda to Congress; and
Whereas, Congressman Flake is famous throughout the United States
for championing causes for the poor, the elderly, the disadvantaged,
and African-Americans; he ran an unusual campaign in gaining
election to the United States House of Representatives involving
grassroots support and activity of these groups; and
Whereas, Congressman Flake's leadership skills are laudatory and
have propelled him in the current Congress to the position of Senior
Democrat on the Committee on Banking and Financial Services'
Subcommittee on Domestic and International Monetary Policy; his
ranking member status provides a forum in which he examines
opportunities for United States' investment in emerging economies
around the world and the role of future United States' involvement
in multilateral development banks; Representative Flake has used this
arena to effectively address the collective economic affairs of African
nations; and
Whereas, Representative Flake is also an outstanding and much
admired ordained minister of the Gospel; in his role as pastor of
Allen African Methodist Episcopal Church in Jamaica, New York, he
has built a dynamic ministry, serving tens of thousands of residents
and church members throughout New York City; the ministry he has
developed and fostered truly meets the basic needs of the people,
including, among many other areas, needs such as care for the
elderly, education for the young people, and adequate housing for our
seniors; during the past two decades, his church budget has risen
from a quarter of a million dollars annually to 4.5 million dollars
annually a sign of phenomenal growth and commitment to the care
of those in need; and
Whereas, we are delighted to have the opportunity to accord
recognition in this special way to Allen University, the University's
"First Family and Friends Banquet", and the banquet's very
distinguished guest speaker from the State of New York, United
States Representative Floyd H. Flake. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this
resolution, recognizes the Greater Columbia Alumni Chapter of Allen
University on its "First Family and Friends Banquet", May 2, 1997,
and welcomes Congressman Floyd H. Flake of New York, the
banquet's guest speaker and distinguished national leader and
champion of causes for the disadvantaged.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
the Greater Columbia Alumni Chapter of Allen University and to
United States Representative Floyd H. Flake.
