RESOLUTION
RECOGNIZING COMMUNITY PRIDE OF CHARLESTON
COUNTY, INC., AND COMMENDING THIS ORGANIZATION
AND CLEMSON UNIVERSITY COOPERATIVE EXTENSION
SERVICE FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING EFFORTS TO INSTILL
PRIDE IN LOCAL CITIZENS FOR A CLEAN AND HEALTHY
ENVIRONMENT.
Whereas, "Pride Week" is sponsored annually in
Charleston to call attention to the continuing need to clean up and
improve the environment; and
Whereas, the Charleston County Community Improvement and
Beautification Committee was organized by Clemson University
Extension Service in 1966 at the request of the Governor's
Beautification and Community Improvement Board as part of a
statewide program; the name was shortened in 1971 to Charleston
Pride, Inc., and incorporated as an eleemosynary organization; the
name was changed again in 1986 to Community Pride of Charleston
County, Inc., so as to more adequately reflect the organization's
activities; and
Whereas, the purposes of the organization are threefold:
(1) inspire a united effort throughout the county in combatting
ugliness and promoting environmental improvement;
(2) provide ideas and information to organizations and
communities for programs and projects;
(3) sustain interest and support continued activity on the part of
all citizens and organizations to improve the environment in
Charleston County; and
Whereas, PRIDE'S projects have included abandoned car pick-up,
beautification, Charleston Mini Parks, Inc., Children's gardening for
recreation, countywide and target area cleanups, recycling, anti-litter
drives, Adopt-a-Highway, and promoting a concern for
environmental protection laws; and
Whereas, in 1995, the Charleston County Adopt-a-Highway
Program utilized 1,391 volunteers who expended 5,771 volunteer
hours in collecting 91,460 pounds of trash; and
Whereas, the Week of April 8-13, 1996 has been scheduled as the
1996 Pride Week; and
Whereas, PRIDE has rendered invaluable service over the years to
the community, and the work and accomplishments of this
exemplary organization are highly deserving of recognition and
commendation. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
