THE COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION

To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (H. 4783) to request that the Department of Transportation name the intersection located at the junction of United States Highway 378 and Double Bridges Road in Saluda PreviousCountyNext "Corley Crossroads" and erect appropriate, etc., respectfully

REPORT:

LAWRENCE K. GROOMS for Committee.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE INTERSECTION LOCATED AT THE JUNCTION OF UNITED STATES HIGHWAY 378 AND DOUBLE BRIDGES ROAD IN SALUDA PreviousCOUNTYNext "CORLEY CROSSROADS" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS INTERSECTION THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS "CORLEY CROSSROADS".

Whereas, the Corley family has a rich history that predates the founding of our nation; and

Whereas, Richard Corley, the earliest Corley of record in the American colonies, was born around 1620 in England and died around 1708 in Hanover PreviousCountyNext, Virginia; and

Whereas, certain descendents of Richard Corley migrated from Virginia to Edgefield PreviousCountyNext; and

Whereas, members of this family played prominent roles in the American Revolutionary War and the Civil War; and

Whereas, the Corley of record for Saluda PreviousCountyNext ancestry was Cartlett Corley. He was born in 1758 and died in 1808. He was a private in the South Carolina Militia during the American Revolutionary War, and a survivor of that war. Cartlett Corley and several members of the Corley family fought in the Revolutionary War's Clouds Creek Massacre; and

Whereas, Cartlett Corley along with seven generations of the Corley family are buried in Saluda PreviousCountyNext within a three mile radius of the intersection of United States Highway 378 and Double Bridges Road; and

Whereas, the area along this crossroad and the nearby Sardis Baptist Church, of which the Corley's have been continuous members since its founding, has been owned by the Corley family for many generations; and

Whereas, the Newberry side of the crossroad has been owned by the family since the early 1900s; and

Whereas, it is believed that the Batesburg side of the crossroad came into the family's possession during the life of Nathaniel Corley; and

Whereas, it would be fitting and proper to pay tribute to the significant impact that the Corley family has played in the history of this PreviouscountryNext, State, and Saluda PreviousCountyNext by having the intersection located at the junction of United States Highway 378 and Double Bridges Road in Saluda PreviousCountyNext named in their honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly request that the Department of Transportation name the intersection located at the junction of United States Highway 378 and Double Bridges Road in Saluda PreviousCounty "Corley Crossroads" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this intersection that contain the words "Corley Crossroads".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
