AN ACT TO AMEND ACT 340 OF 1967, AS AMENDED, RELATING TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE CHARLESTON PreviousCOUNTYNext SCHOOL DISTRICT AND THE CONSTITUENT SCHOOL DISTRICTS OF THE PreviousCOUNTYNext, SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT ANY MEMBER WHO IS ABSENT FROM FIVE CONSECUTIVE MEETINGS OF THE BOARD WITHIN ONE YEAR WITHOUT JUST CAUSE MAY BE REMOVED FROM THE BOARD UPON A MAJORITY VOTE OF THE MEMBERS.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

Members who are absent for five consecutive meetings may be removed

SECTION 1. Subsection (a) of Section 3 of Act 340 of 1967, as last amended by Act 230 of 1983, is further amended to read:

"(a) The initial members of the board of trustees appointed pursuant to Section 2 of this act shall take office on July 1, 1967, and from that date through June 30, 1968, shall exercise all of the powers, duties, and functions now devolved by law upon the PreviouscountyNext board of education of Charleston PreviousCountyNext. On and after July 1, 1968, they shall serve as the board of trustees for the Charleston PreviousCountyNext School District created by this act. The members of the board of trustees shall meet within ten days after their appointment and shall organize by electing from their number a chairman and vice-chairman. All meetings of the board shall be held in the office of the superintendent of education for the School District of Charleston PreviousCountyNext. The members of the board shall receive a per diem allowance of twenty-five dollars for meetings actually attended, not exceeding fifty meetings in any calendar year, and mileage at the rate of nine cents per mile for each mile of travel from the place of his residence to and from such meetings. A majority of the board members shall constitute the action of the board. Any member who is absent from five consecutive meetings of the board within one year without just cause may be removed from the board upon a majority vote of the members. The terms of office of the members of the PreviouscountyNext board of education of Charleston PreviousCounty shall be terminated on June 30, 1967."

Time effective

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon approval by the Governor.
