A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
SALUTING THE LATE D. TRAVIS (DOC) TAYLOR OF BRITTONS NECK, MARION COUNTY, AND ALL OF THE TAYLOR FAMILY AND DESCENDANTS, ON THE OCCASION OF THE NAMING OF STATE ROAD 34-86 IN MARION COUNTY AS THE "D. TRAVIS (DOC) TAYLOR ROAD" IN RECOGNITION OF MR. TAYLOR'S NUMEROUS CONTRIBUTIONS TO HIS COMMUNITY.
Whereas, Mr. D. Travis (Doc) Taylor was born in the Brittons Neck section of Marion County August 4, 1886, and died February 3, 1966; and
Whereas, he was educator, school principal, farmer, and community leader; he was also a man of vision and that vision extended to all of Marion County and, particularly, to the children of the Brittons Neck community, where he lived and died; and
Whereas, Mr. Taylor was the first African-American landowner in his community; he taught school there for forty-five years; he served on many committees in Marion County, including Electrification, Brittons Neck 4-H, Boy Scouts, Soil Conservation, and Farmers Home Administration; and
Whereas, he provided shelter, food, and clothing for many needy families and gave assistance to people when needed; and
Whereas, in recognition of Doc Taylor's leadership and contributions, the South Carolina Department of Transportation Commission, meeting on December 16, 1999, formally resolved that State Road 34-86 in the Brittons Neck section of Marion County be named in memory of the late Mr. Taylor; and
Whereas, the official ceremony to accomplish this action is to be held on March 11, 2000, at 11:30 a.m. at Brittons Neck High School; and
Whereas, this is an honor of great distinction in which Doc Taylor's family and descendants take great pride and pleasure. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, salutes the late D. Travis (Doc) Taylor of Brittons Neck, Marion County, and all of the Taylor family and descendants, on the occasion of the naming of State Road 34-86 in Marion County as the "D. Travis (Doc) Taylor Road" in recognition of Mr. Taylor's numerous contributions to his community.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Taylor family.
