A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO NAME THE NEW BRIDGE SPANNING THE BROAD RIVER IN BEAUFORT COUNTY PRESENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION THE "COURSEN-TATE CROSSING" IN MEMORY OF SHERIFF DEPUTIES DYKE "A.J." COURSEN AND DANA TATE WHO WERE KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY ON JANUARY 8, 2002, WHILE ATTEMPTING TO RENDER AID TO CITIZENS, AND TO INSTALL APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS ON THE BRIDGE CONTAINING THE WORDS "COURSEN-TATE CROSSING" IN MEMORY OF DEPUTIES COURSEN'S AND TATE'S DEDICATION, LOVE, AND SERVICE TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND BEAUFORT COUNTY.
Whereas, the General Assembly historically honors peace officers, who die in the line of duty, by naming bridges in the county in their honor; and
Whereas, Deputies Dyke "A.J." Coursen and Dana Tate, of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, were killed in the line of duty on January 8, 2002, while attempting to render aid to citizens; and
Whereas, Beaufort County, the State of South Carolina, and the South Carolina Department of Transportation are currently constructing a new bridge spanning the Broad River; and
Whereas, it would be appropriate and a fitting tribute to honor Deputies Coursen and Tate by designating the new Broad River Bridge in Beaufort County as the "Coursen-Tate Crossing". Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly hereby request that the Department of Transportation name the new bridge spanning the Broad River in Beaufort County presently under construction the "Coursen-Tate Crossing" in memory of sheriff deputies Dyke "A.J." Coursen and Dana Tate who were killed in the line of duty on January 8, 2002, while attempting to render aid to citizens, and install appropriate markers or signs on the bridge containing the words "Coursen-Tate Crossing" in memory of deputies Coursen's and Tate's dedication, love, and service to the State of South Carolina and Beaufort County.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
