S. 1204
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE AND CELEBRATE THE 300TH ANNIVERSARY OF ST. BARTHOLOMEW PARISH, LATER KNOWN AS COLLETON COUNTY, ON MARCH 3, 2006, AND TO EXTEND TO ALL THE OFFICIALS PARTICIPATING IN THIS CELEBRATION AN APPRECIATION FOR THEIR PART IN PLANNING THIS WONDROUS OCCASION.
Whereas, it has come to the attention of the members of the General Assembly that St. Bartholomew Parish, known today as Colleton County, is celebrating its 300th Anniversary on March 3, 2006; and
Whereas, St. Bartholomew Parish was one of ten parishes established in Coastal Carolina by the Colonial Assembly; and
Whereas, these parishes became the basic unit of government for the citizens of the parish and exercised civil, as well as ecclesiastical responsibilities; and
Whereas, St. Bartholomew Parish became the official government from 1706 until the American Revolution; and
Whereas, Pon Pon Chapel of Ease was established in 1725; and
Whereas, much of the historical importance of St. Bartholomew Parish up to present-day Colleton County has occurred between the Edisto and Combahee rivers in the Lowcounty of South Carolina; and
Whereas, by the celebrations of this event on the weekend of March 3-5, 2006, it underscores the significance for our citizens to gain greater awareness of and appreciation for the history of this county, including the special role that St. Bartholomew's Parish played in the early formation of this country and State; and
Whereas, the events planned are intended to bring a community together with a shared sense of destiny; and
Whereas, at a time when this county and the municipalities located in it are vigorously striving to realize the appropriate growth and prosperity for all of the citizens of Colleton County, it is only fitting and proper that as many as possible should attend the celebratory events. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly recognize and celebrate the 300th Anniversary of St. Bartholomew Parish, later known as Colleton County, on March 3, 2006, and to extend to all the officials participating in this celebration an appreciation for their part in planning this wondrous occasion.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society.
