A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF BETTY ANN YOUNG BUTLER OF EDGEFIELD PreviousCOUNTYNext AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened by the passing of Betty Ann Young Butler of Edgefield PreviousCountyNext on March 12, 2017; and

Whereas, in preparation for her career, this resident of Trenton and native of Edgefield PreviousCountyNext graduated in 1968 from W.E. Parker High School. She attended Claflin College and graduated cum laude from Paine College in 1972 with a bachelor's degree in English, followed by a master's degree from the University of South Carolina in 1980. She taught English for more than forty years; and

Whereas, Betty Ann Butler believed strongly in personal involvement with her community, and her convictions led her to serve that community in various capacities. These include service on many PreviouscountyNext and community boards, among them PreviousCountyNext Council District 4, Edgefield PreviousCountyNext Planning Commission, PreviousCountyNext Line Fire Department, and Edgefield PreviousCountyNext Hospital Board. She also served as coordinator for the Bettis Academy Heritage Preservation Team and as director of Biddle Hall Museum; and

Whereas, in addition, she was a life member and secretary of the Edgefield Branch of the NAACP and served as basileus/president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. As a woman of faith, she was a member of Mt. Canaan Baptist Church; and

Whereas, Mrs. Butler leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Deacon Calvin Butler; a son, Darold Butler; four grandchildren, Jayden, Derrien, Kaleb, and Madison Butler; and a host of other family members and friends. She will be missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Betty Ann Young Butler of Edgefield PreviousCounty and extend the deepest sympathy to her family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Deacon Calvin Butler for the family.
