AN ACT TO PROVIDE FOR TWO ADDITIONAL MEMBERS OF THE ALLENDALE PreviousCOUNTYNext BOARD OF EDUCATION TO SERVE FOR TERMS TO EXPIRE IN 2000, TO PROVIDE FOR THE MANNER IN WHICH THESE ADDITIONAL MEMBERS SHALL BE APPOINTED, TO PROVIDE THAT THEIR SUCCESSORS SHALL BE ELECTED AT THE 2000 ELECTION IN THE MANNER THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY SHALL PROVIDE BY LAW, AND TO PROVIDE FOR THE MANNER IN WHICH A VACANCY IS FILLED ON THE BOARD IF ONE OCCURS FOR ANY REASON OTHER THAN THE EXPIRATION OF A TERM OF OFFICE.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

Allendale PreviousCountyNext Board of Education

SECTION 1. Notwithstanding any other provision of law:

(1) There shall be two additional members of the Allendale PreviousCountyNext Board of Education to be appointed from the PreviouscountyNext at large by the Governor upon the recommendation of the Allendale PreviousCountyNext Legislative Delegation for terms to commence on July 1, 1998, and to expire when their successors elected at the 2000 election, as hereinafter provided, take office. Each of these two members shall serve until their successors are selected and qualify. The General Assembly by law shall provide for the manner in which successors to these two members shall be elected beginning with the 2000 election.

(2) If a vacancy occurs on the board for any reason, other than expiration of a term, nine months or more before the scheduled expiration of the term of the member giving rise to the vacancy, it shall be filled for the remainder of the unexpired term by special election to be conducted by the Allendale PreviousCountyNext Registration and Elections Commission in the same manner regular school elections are conducted, mutatis mutandis. The Allendale PreviousCountyNext Registration and Elections Commission shall set the date of the elections, conduct the elections in accordance with applicable law, and declare and certify the results.

(3) If a vacancy occurs on the board for any reason, other than expiration of a term, less than nine months before the scheduled expiration of the term of the member giving rise to the vacancy, it shall be filled for the remainder of the unexpired term by appointment of the Governor upon the recommendation of the Allendale PreviousCounty Legislative Delegation.

Time effective

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
