H 4020 Joint Resolution, By Fair
 A Joint Resolution directing the State Superintendent of Education to inform
 the science teachers in the State's public schools that, consistent with the
 expressions of the United States Supreme Court in "EdwardsNext V. Aguillard", they
 have the freedom and flexibility to supplement the present science curriculum
 with the presentation of various methods of the origins of life, and of
 humankind in particular, and providing that the State Superintendent shall
 inform the science teachers accordingly within ninety days of the enactment of
 this Joint Resolution and shall make a report to the General Assembly.

A JOINT RESOLUTION

DIRECTING THE STATE SUPERINTENDENT OF EDUCATION TO INFORM THE SCIENCE TEACHERS IN THE STATE'S PUBLIC SCHOOLS THAT, CONSISTENT WITH THE EXPRESSIONS OF THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT IN PreviousEDWARDSNext V. AGUILLARD, THEY HAVE THE FREEDOM AND FLEXIBILITY TO SUPPLEMENT THE PRESENT SCIENCE CURRICULUM WITH THE PRESENTATION OF VARIOUS METHODS OF THE ORIGINS OF LIFE, AND OF HUMANKIND IN PARTICULAR, AND PROVIDING THAT THE STATE SUPERINTENDENT SHALL INFORM THE SCIENCE TEACHERS ACCORDINGLY WITHIN NINETY DAYS OF THE ENACTMENT OF THIS JOINT RESOLUTION AND SHALL MAKE A REPORT TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. The State Superintendent of Education shall inform the science teachers in the public schools of this State that, consistent with the expressions of the United States Supreme Court in PreviousEdwards v. Aguillard, 482 U.S. 578, 96 L.Ed.2d 510, 107 S.Ct. 2573 (1987), as to what is permissible under the United States Constitution, they have the freedom and flexibility to supplement the present science curriculum with the presentation of various methods of the origins of life, and of humankind in particular, if done with the secular intent of enhancing the comprehensiveness and effectiveness of science instruction.

SECTION 2. The State Superintendent of Education shall inform the science teachers in accordance with Section 1 within ninety days of the enactment of this joint resolution and shall report to the General Assembly within twelve months of the enactment of this joint resolution that the notification has been sent to the science teachers.

SECTION 3. This joint resolution takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
