A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
EXPRESSING THE SINCERE SORROW OF THE MEMBERS
OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY AT THE DEATH OF MRS.
LAURA TOLIVER "MOTHER" JEFFERSON OF
RICHLAND COUNTY AND EXTENDING DEEPEST
SYMPATHY TO MRS. JEFFERSON'S FAMILY AND MANY
FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are deeply
saddened to learn of the death of Mrs. Laura Toliver
"Mother" Jefferson of Columbia, on Saturday, March
16, 1996, at the age of ninety-three; and
Whereas, she was a native of Richland County and a loving wife
and mother to her husband and ten children; and
Whereas, Mrs. Jefferson was a graduate of St. Mary's Catholic
School and a respected employee of the area's public libraries and
public school system; and
Whereas, she was a beloved and respected member of her
community who affectionately became known as "Mother
Jefferson"; and
Whereas, Mother Jefferson epitomized a spirit of kindness, caring,
and love for her fellow citizens of the Little Camden, Arthurtown,
and Taylors communities and was responsible for many of the
improvements being made to these areas; and
Whereas, she was one of the area's first registered voters and was
responsible for registering and encouraging many of the areas
citizens to vote; and
Whereas, Mother Jefferson was responsible for teaching many of
her neighbors to read and provided a positive role model for many
of the communities' younger citizens; and
Whereas, she provided a voice for the community for over thirty
years in a tireless attempt to bring many of the overdue
infrastructure services to her community; and
Whereas, her tenacity and perseverance culminated in the signing of
a contract on July 5, 1994, for the building and development of
vital infrastructure services for the Little Camden, Arthurtown, and
Taylors communities, thereby completing the realization of a
lifelong dream; and
Whereas, Mother Jefferson's house was the first in the community
to receive the benefit of these services in recognition of her
instrumental role in bringing these services to the community; and
Whereas, Mrs. Jefferson was a fine South Carolinian who was loved
and admired by countless individuals for her devotion and duty to
her family and community; and
Whereas, her death represents a great loss to the Little Camden
community and the citizens of Richland County, and the members
of the General Assembly want the members of the Jefferson family
to know that they are in our uppermost thoughts and prayers during
this difficult time. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly wish to express
profound sorrow at the death of Mrs. Laura Toliver
"Mother" Jefferson, of Columbia, and extend the
deepest sympathy to the members of her family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Mrs. Jefferson's family.
