TO RECOGNIZE JESSIE JEFFCOAT AND THE FIVE SINGING SONS OF NORTH FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TOWARD PRESERVING THE HERITAGE OF AFRICAN AMERICAN GOSPEL MUSIC, SPREADING KNOWLEDGE AND LOVE OF THIS MUSICAL TREASURE, AND CREATING NEW AUDIENCES FOR ITS ENJOYMENT.
Whereas, gospel music is an integral part of the cultural fiber of South Carolina and the United States and, more particularly, of the African American community; and
Whereas, the history of gospel music and the African American community are interwoven in such a way that the music has often reflected the struggles, challenges, and victories of the African American community; and
Whereas, as part of the gospel music industry for more than thirty years, Jessie Jeffcoat and The Five Singing Sons of North are one of the most recognized gospel groups to tour this country, and lead singer Jessie Jeffcoat has one of the most recognized voices in gospel music; and
Whereas, becoming national recording artists when they were signed by the Atlanta International Records label, this group has recorded some of the most memorable gospel songs of all time, including "Resting Beyond the Sky"; and
Whereas, although blessed to call North home, Jessie Jeffcoat and The Five Singing Sons of North perform well beyond its boundaries, possessing a well-deserved worldwide reputation as one of the best representatives of traditional gospel quartet music ever to sing the Good News of Jesus. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize Jessie Jeffcoat and The Five Singing Sons of North for their outstanding contribution toward preserving the heritage of African American gospel music, spreading knowledge and love of this musical treasure, and creating new audiences for its enjoyment.
