A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE LUGOFF-ELGIN HIGH SCHOOL "DEMONS" WRESTLING TEAM OF KERSHAW COUNTY ON WINNING THE 1997 CLASS AAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

Whereas, the Lugoff-Elgin High School "Demons" Wrestling Team picked the perfect day to wrestle at its best with an unbelievable win over Seneca High 59-7 to capture the 1997 Class AAA State Championship, which will go down as one of the most dominant in our state history; and

Whereas, the Demons recorded seven pins and one technical pin to finish their outstanding season at 27-1, a school record for wins, with its only loss to undefeated Rock Hill; and

Whereas, Head Coach Tom Walsh, along with his Assistant Coaches Andrew Heddy and Joe Carron, have brought recognition to Lugoff-Elgin High School after their team's dominating season and championship performance; and

Whereas, Coach Walsh has been honored and recognized on numerous occasions during his tenure as a wrestling coach beginning in the 1989-90 season while coaching James Island, by being named the Region 6-AAAA Coach of the Year and continuing as follows: 1991-92 All-Star Coach; 1993-94 Region 5-AAA Coach of the Year; 1994-95 Region 5-AAA Coach of the Year; and 1995-96 AAA Upper-State Coach of the Year and All-Star Coach; and

Whereas, this championship squad consisted of: Chris Angel, Matt Baker, Ben Connell, Bert Feltner, Terrence Frechette, Justin Gainey, Peter Hemingway, Jeremiah Hightower, Jack Lostetter, John Marshall, Maurice Murphy, Daniel Norris, Jeff Pearson, and Matt Strickland; and

Whereas, the countless hours of practice, hard work, and sacrifices certainly reflect the Demons' determination and dream of becoming the 1997 State Wrestling Champions; and

Whereas, the success of the 1997 Lugoff-Elgin Wrestling Team has brought great pride and recognition not only upon Kershaw County, but also to the State of South Carolina as well; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly would like to publicly recognize and congratulate the Lugoff-Elgin Wrestling Team, coaches, and other school officials upon the conclusion of a truly memorable season. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate the Lugoff-Elgin High School "Demons" Wrestling Team of Kershaw County on winning the 1997 Class AAA State Championship.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Head Coach Tim Wash and Principal Creig Tyler of Lugoff-Elgin High School.
