A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE NUCOR CORPORATION FOR THE TREMENDOUS SUCCESS OF ITS OPERATIONS IN SOUTH CAROLINA, THANK NUCOR FOR ITS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE STATE'S ECONOMY AND ENVIRONMENT, AND EXPRESS THE HOPE THAT THE POSITIVE WORKING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NUCOR AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA WILL CONTINUE FOR MANY YEARS TO COME.

Whereas, the Nucor Corporation, which is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, became the largest steel recycler in the United States in 2001; and

Whereas, Nucor operates four facilities in South Carolina and employs more than 1800 workers in the Palmetto State; and

Whereas, Nucor facilities in South Carolina produce carbon and alloy steel in bars and sheets, steel joist and joist girders, steel deck, cold finished steel, and metal building systems; and

Whereas, with its remarkable technology and high-level efficiency Nucor's South Carolina steel producing facilities recycle more than 3.1 million tons of steel each year, having already recycled more than 1,704,000 tons of steel in 2002; this involves the recycling of 4.3 million junked cars each year; and

Whereas, Nucor's four facilities in South Carolina have produced more than one billion dollars in total sales and have received more than one billion dollars in total investment, making Nucor one of the most successful companies in the State; and

Whereas, the Nucor Corporation is planning to invest an additional forty-seven million dollars in its South Carolina operations in the year 2002; and

Whereas, Nucor has significantly helped improve education in South Carolina through its contribution of over three hundred thousand dollars in educational scholarships in 2001; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is sincerely grateful for the fantastic investments made by the Nucor Corporation into South Carolina's economy and educational system. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, commend the Nucor Corporation for the tremendous success of its operations in South Carolina, thank Nucor for its contributions to the state's economy, and express the hope that the positive working relationship between Nucor and the State of South Carolina will continue for many years to come.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mike Gurley, General Manager of Nucor's Darlington facility, Ladd Hall, General Manager of Nucor's Berkeley facility, Lynn Strock, General Manager of Nucor's Florence facility, and Jeff Carmean, General Manager of Nucor's Swansea facility.
