A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE HEARTY CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE 2000-2001 MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM AT WINTHROP UNIVERSITY FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND CONTINUED EXCELLENCE OVER THE PAST THREE BASKETBALL SEASONS AND TO RECOGNIZE THE WINTHROP "EAGLES" RETURN TO THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION'S CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT.

Whereas, the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina is pleased and honored to recognize and commend the accomplishments of the Winthrop University Men's Basketball Team this past year and its consistent excellence over the last three years; and

Whereas, the Winthrop "Eagles" won their third consecutive Big South Conference Championship, becoming the first conference school to achieve that feat in the sixteen-year history of the basketball tournament. With the conference victory, the "Eagles" made a third straight trip to the NCAA Championship Tournament as the Big South Conference's automatic bid recipient; and

Whereas, Winthrop has averaged twenty wins over the past three years and has compiled a home record of thirty-six wins and three losses over the same three year period. The "Eagles" have extended their consecutive homecourt conference game-winning streak to twenty-one straight games. That is the second longest streak in the nation for NCAA Division I schools; and

Whereas, the members of this outstanding basketball team include: Tywan Harris, Bryant Latimer, Derrick Knox, Pierre Wooten, Tyrone Myers, Anthony Moore, Greg Lewis, Tyrone Walker, Josh Grant, Tommy Johnson, Alasanne Bakayoko, Eyo Effiong, Gabe Leventis, and Marcus Stewart; and

Whereas, Head Coach Gregg Marshall, along with Associate Head Coach Jeff Meyer, and Assistant Coaches Shaun Golden and Damon Stephenson have all worked very hard in season and out of season to reach such a high standard of athletic achievement that has not been matched by any other conference foe; and

Whereas, in a game which is dependent upon teamwork, several individuals were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the team's success. Two players, Marcus Stewart and Derrick Knox, were voted to the 2001 Big South All-Conference first and second teams, respectively. Also, Tyrone Walker was voted 2001 Big South Conference Rookie of the Year; and

Whereas, the Winthrop University Men's Basketball Team has performed at a level which very few teams can attain, the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina is pleased to pause in its deliberations and recognize the grand accomplishments of this team and the pride that it has bestowed upon the fine University that it represents. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, expresses their hearty congratulations to the 2000-2001 Men's Basketball Team at Winthrop University for an outstanding season and continued excellence over the past three basketball seasons and to recognize the Winthrop "Eagles" return to the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Championship Tournament.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Head Coach Gregg Marshall on behalf of Winthrop University that his team represents so well.
