A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING PROFOUND SORROW AND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF MRS. JANIE BRADSHAW MURPHY OF LEE COUNTY, WHO LIVED TO THE REMARKABLE AGE OF ONE HUNDRED ELEVEN.

Whereas, Mrs. Janie Bradshaw Murphy, the daughter of Rosa Holmes Rubin and Andrew Bradshaw, was born January 6, 1890, in Lee County, where she lived her entire life. She passed away on January 2, 2002 and was laid to rest on her one hundred and twelfth birthday; and

Whereas, throughout her life she was a devout Christian, and she was a faithful member of St. John AME Church for ninety years, having joined the church in 1912; and

Whereas, Mrs. Murphy was married to the late Jeff Murphy, Sr., and their marriage was blessed with eight daughters and two sons, fifty-five grandchildren, one hundred forty-two great grandchildren, one hundred six great-great grandchildren, ten great-great-great grandchildren, and several great-great-great-great grandchildren; and

Whereas, Mrs. Murphy was not only a devoted mother and wife, and grandmother cherished by many generations, but she also was dedicated to serving her community and was an active member of the Lee County Council on Aging and was a member of the Benjamin Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star #346 for forty-two years; and

Whereas, Mrs. Janie Bradshaw Murphy was a gentle southern woman who lived an amazingly long and happy life, full of family, friends, service, and Christian worship. She was dearly loved and deeply admired by all who knew her, and she will be greatly missed.

Whereas it is fitting and proper that we pause in our deliberations to recognize the extraordinary life of such a distinguished daughter of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow and deepest sympathy upon the death of Mrs. Janie Bradshaw Murphy of Lee County, who lived to the remarkable age of one hundred eleven.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Mrs. Janie Bradshaw Murphy.
