S. 1224

A SENATE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE SOUTH CAROLINA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF AND THE BLIND GOALBALL TEAM FOR WINNING THE UNITED STATES ASSOCIATION OF BLIND ATHLETES' 2005 YOUTH NATIONAL GOALBALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN A TWELVE TEAM TOURNAMENT IN FLORIDA, COMMENDING THEM FOR THEIR DEDICATION AND HARD WORK, AND WISHING THEM MUCH LUCK IN THEIR FUTURE SEASONS.

Whereas, the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind was founded in 1894 by Reverend Newton Pinckney Walker who, even during the earliest days, considered physical activity an important aspect of learning and overall development; and

Whereas, goalball, invented in 1946, is a sport specifically designed for individuals who are blind. The game, which can take years to master, is a very physically demanding. Players are blindfolded so that no one has an advantage over another, regardless of their ability to see. Teams score by rolling a heavy red ball, which contains noise bells, into the opposition's goal; and

Whereas, the school's team, led by Coach Lou Thomson, consisted of Westley Campbell of Spartanburg, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, Matt Crissman of Charleston, Tyler Horton of Kershaw, Rashad Morgan of Greenwood, Sherman Paul of York, Quinci Robertson of Spartanburg, and Jeff Smith of Travelers Rest; and

Whereas, Westley Campbell and Rashad Morgan were two of only six athletes chosen nationwide for the honor of playing on the All-American goalball team. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind Goalball team for winning the United States Association for Blind Athletes' 2005 Youth National Goalball Championship, commend them for their dedication and hard work, and wish them much luck in future seasons.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind.
