H. 4670

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND ONE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S MOST ACCOMPLISHED JAZZ MUSICIANS, TENOR SAXOPHONIST SKIPP PEARSON, FOR MORE THAN FORTY YEARS OF ENTERTAINING THOUSANDS OF JAZZ LOVERS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES AND HELPING TO PRESERVE THE ART OF JAZZ MUSIC FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.

Whereas, Thales Thomas "Skipp" Pearson is one of the most admired and widely known tenor saxophonists in the United States; and

Whereas, he was born in Orangeburg in 1937, began his musical journey on the drums, switched to the saxophone around the sixth grade, and lead his own orchestra at the age of fifteen; and

Whereas, after serving four years in the Air Force upon enlisting at the age of nineteen, he spent time in New York and Washington D. C. before returning to South Carolina; and

Whereas, he earned a music degree from Claflin College in 1973 and was a music teacher and school band director in Bamberg and Clarendon Counties for more than twenty years; and

Whereas, as a performing musician Skipp Pearson has done more to preserve jazz music in South Carolina than any other person; and

Whereas, he has won the state's highest arts award, he started the Skipp Pearson Foundation to preserve the art of jazz, and he stays busy performing his two regular weekly gigs and special events from weddings to concerts; and

Whereas, his foundation presents lectures, workshops, and performances, and its mission is to preserve jazz music in South Carolina. It seeks to enrich minds and lives through listening to and learning about jazz; and

Whereas, South Carolina is blessed to claim this truly gifted artist as one of its native sons, and the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and honor him for a career that has enriched the lives of so many jazz lovers. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly commend one of South Carolina's most accomplished jazz musicians, tenor saxophonist Skipp Pearson, for more than forty years of entertaining thousands of jazz lovers throughout the United States and helping to preserve the art of jazz music for future generations.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Pearson.
