H. 3676

A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 1-1-691 SO AS TO DESIGNATE EDGEFIELD POTTERY AS THE OFFICIAL FOLK POTTERY OF THIS STATE.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    The General Assembly finds that:

(1)    two hundred years ago in the old Edgefield District of South Carolina there began a pottery-making tradition based on Chinese technology, using English traditional methods to make diverse types of pottery;

(2)    this tradition moved south and west as far as Texas with the Old Edgefield District becoming nationally known as the beginning of the alkaline glazed pottery tradition; and

(3)    today, the nineteenth century alkaline glazed pottery tradition is recognized internationally as a cherished art form with contributions from white settlers, African and Native American artists, and has brought great distinction to the State of South Carolina.

SECTION    2.    Chapter 1, Title 1 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 1-1-691.    Edgefield Pottery is designated as the official folk pottery of this State."

SECTION    3.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
