H. 3865

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE THE JARVIS BROTHERS FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TOWARD PRESERVING THE HERITAGE OF AFRICAN AMERICAN GOSPEL MUSIC, SPREADING KNOWLEDGE AND LOVE OF THIS MUSICAL TREASURE, AND CREATING NEW AUDIENCES FOR ITS ENJOYMENT.

Whereas, gospel music is an integral part of the cultural fiber of South Carolina and the United States and, more particularly, of the African American community; and

Whereas, the history of gospel music and the African American community are interwoven in such a way that the music has often reflected the struggles, challenges, and victories of the African American community; and

Whereas, as part of the gospel music industry for more than forty years, The Jarvis Brothers, whose unaccompanied voices sound forth in beautiful spirituals, perform their music in five-part harmony; and

Whereas, in recognition of their accomplishments, this group was selected for inclusion in the BellSouth South Carolina African American History Calendar; and

Whereas, although blessed to call Orangeburg home, The Jarvis Brothers perform well beyond its boundaries, possessing a well-deserved national reputation that has taken them in concert to the Smithsonian Institution and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize The Jarvis Brothers for their outstanding contribution toward preserving the heritage of African American gospel music, spreading knowledge and love of this musical treasure, and creating new audiences for its enjoyment.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to The Jarvis Brothers.
