H. 3866

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE BILL PINKNEY & THE GOSPEL DRIFTERS FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TOWARD PRESERVING THE HERITAGE OF AFRICAN AMERICAN GOSPEL MUSIC, SPREADING KNOWLEDGE AND LOVE OF THIS MUSICAL TREASURE, AND CREATING NEW AUDIENCES FOR ITS ENJOYMENT.

Whereas, gospel music is an integral part of the cultural fiber of South Carolina and the United States and, more particularly, of the African American community; and

Whereas, the history of gospel music and the African American community are interwoven in such a way that the music has often reflected the struggles, challenges, and victories of the African American community; and

Whereas, as part of the music industry for more than seventy years, Bill Pinkney, the only surviving member of the music group The Drifters, formed The Gospel Drifters eight years ago to proclaim the gospel in song, and the quartet has become one of the most recognized gospel groups to tour this country; and

Whereas, Mr. Pinkney, who is from Sumter, has been further recognized through presentation with the Order of the Palmetto and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; and

Whereas, although blessed to call the United States home, Bill Pinkney & The Gospel Drifters perform well beyond its boundaries, possessing a well-deserved worldwide reputation as one of the best gospel groups ever to sing the Good News of Jesus. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize Bill Pinkney & The Gospel Drifters for their outstanding contribution toward preserving the heritage of African American gospel music, spreading knowledge and love of this musical treasure, and creating new audiences for its enjoyment.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Bill Pinkney & The Gospel Drifters.
