THE COMMITTEE ON

INVITATIONS AND MEMORIAL RESOLUTIONS

To whom was referred a House Resolution (H. 3571) to commend Taiwan on its contributions to the global economy, such as the promotion of world peace, liberty, and human rights, and to support Taiwan's efforts to join, etc., respectfully

REPORT:

That they have duly and carefully considered the same and recommend that the same do pass:

ROBERT W. LEACH, SR. for Committee.

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND TAIWAN ON ITS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE GLOBAL ECONOMY, SUCH AS THE PROMOTION OF WORLD PEACE, LIBERTY, AND HUMAN RIGHTS, AND TO SUPPORT TAIWAN'S EFFORTS TO JOIN THE UNITED NATIONS, THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION, AND OTHER INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS.

Whereas, Taiwan and the United States of America are long-standing allies, both dearly cherishing universal values of freedom, democracy, and human rights; and

Whereas, Taiwan is the world's sixteenth-largest economy, the United States' eighth largest trading partner, as well as the fifth largest market for the United States' agricultural products; and

Whereas, the State of South Carolina and Taiwan have enjoyed long and mutually beneficial sister-state relations since 1981, with the prospect of further growth, and the State of South Carolina supports a free trade agreement between the United States and Taiwan; and

Whereas, Taiwan, as a leading manufacturer of information and technology products, is an indispensable provider in the global high-tech industry, and its peace and stability are vital to not only the economies of the Asian Pacific region but also the world economy; and

Whereas, Taiwan, as one of the most active contributing parties in disaster relief efforts worldwide, is not represented in the United Nations, World Health Organization, and other important international organizations, a situation hindering the human rights of the twenty-three million inhabitants of Taiwan. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend Taiwan on its contributions to the global economy, such as the promotion of world peace, liberty, and human rights, and support Taiwan's efforts to join the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and other international organizations.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. R.C. Wu, Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Atlanta.
