 A SENATE RESOLUTION TO AUTHORIZE THE COMMISSIONING OF A PORTRAIT OF THE
 HONORABLE EDWARD ELI SALEEBY OF HARTSVILLE IN DARLINGTON COUNTY TO BE PLACED
 IN THE SENATE CHAMBER, A LONGTIME AND BELOVED SENATOR FROM THE TWENTY-NINTH
 SENATORIAL DISTRICT, A LOYAL AND COMPASSIONATE PUBLIC SERVANT, AND A
 DISTINGUISHED STATESMAN.

TO AUTHORIZE THE COMMISSIONING OF A PORTRAIT OF THE HONORABLE EDWARD ELI SALEEBY OF HARTSVILLE IN DARLINGTON COUNTY TO BE PLACED IN THE SENATE CHAMBER, A LONGTIME AND BELOVED SENATOR FROM THE TWENTY-NINTH SENATORIAL DISTRICT, A LOYAL AND COMPASSIONATE PUBLIC SERVANT, AND A DISTINGUISHED STATESMAN.

Whereas, the Honorable Edward Eli Saleeby of Hartsville represented Darlington County as a distinguished member of the Senate from 1973 until his death in 2002; and

Whereas, Senator Saleeby was a distinguished member of the House of Representatives from 1951-58; and

Whereas, during Senator Saleeby's distinguished political career he served as Chairman of the Banking and Insurance Committee, Chairman of the Ethics Committee, and served on numerous committees including Corrections and Penology, Judiciary, and Labor, Commerce and Industry; and

Whereas, in addition to his outstanding service to the citizens of this State during his tenure in the Senate, Senator Saleeby achieved great professional success as an attorney in Hartsville; and

Whereas, Senator Saleeby's selfless service to the citizens of South Carolina has been documented by his numerous involvements as President of the S.C. Trial Lawyers Association, member of the Board of Directors of S.C. Bar Association, member of the University of South Carolina Trustees, member of the Board of Trustees of Coker College, member of the Board of Visitors of Clemson University, and Hartsville Man of the Year in 1981; and

Whereas, throughout a successful business and political career he remained committed to his family by being a devoted husband to his wife, Willie Meta Calcutt Saleeby, father to his three children, Edward Eli Saleeby, Jr., Holly Saleeby Atkins, and Kay Saleeby Bouknight, and grandfather to his three grandchildren, Edward Eli Saleeby, III, Nathaniel Stanton Saleeby, and Caleb Cleveland McLaurin Saleeby; and

Whereas, Senator Saleeby was a faithful and longtime member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Hartsville; and

Whereas, the many contributions of Senator Saleeby to the well-being of the citizens of the State are numerous and greatly deserving of permanent recognition and tribute in a place of honor in the Senate Chamber where he served with such great distinction. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the Senate authorizes the commissioning of a portrait of the Honorable Edward Eli Saleeby of Hartsville to be hung in the Senate Chamber as a tribute to this great South Carolinian and distinguished statesman.

Be it further resolved that a Portrait Committee of seven members of the Senate be appointed by the President Pro Tempore of the Senate. The senior member of the committee shall serve as its chairman. The committee shall handle the arrangements and details of the hanging of a portrait including, but not limited to, the size and location for the portrait and an appropriate ceremony to commemorate the unveiling and dedication of the portrait. The cost of obtaining the portrait must be paid by private contributions.

Be it further resolved that the Clerk of the Senate shall provide such assistance and services as the Committee shall direct.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of the Honorable Edward Eli Saleeby.
