TO EXPRESS A WARM WELCOME BY THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO MARIA DO CARMO REBOUCAS DA CRUZ OF PreviousWASHINGTONNext, D.C., AS SHE VISITS THE STATE TO PARTICIPATE IN BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVENTS IN COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2005.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to have the opportunity to welcome Maria Do Carmo ReBoucas Da Cruz to South Carolina; and

Whereas, Ms. Da Cruz is currently an attorney with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights - OAS and was formerly employed by the International Human Rights Law Group; and

Whereas, she has dedicated her professional and personal life to the protection of human rights; and

Whereas, she is a member of the National Brazilian Lawyers Association, the Brazilian Association of Women Legal Professionals, and the National Network Against Racial Discrimination; and

Whereas, multi-talented in many respects, Ms. Da Cruz also is a native speaker of Portuguese and is fluent in both Spanish and English; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to recognize the many accomplishments of Ms. Da Cruz and to take notice that it is a privilege to have her come down from our nation's Capitol to lend her time and talents to the celebration of Black History Month. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their warm welcome to Maria Do Carmo Reboucas Da Cruz of PreviousWashington, D.C., as she visits the State to participate in Black History Month events in Columbia, South Carolina on Wednesday, February 16, 2005.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Ms. Da Cruz.
