2. Estimated Cost to State-Annually
Thereafter $30,000
Senate Bill 868 amends current legislation so as to revise the
eligibility requirement pertaining to a veteran's residency in South
Carolina. This bill would provide free tuition for a child of certain
veterans who were residents of the State at the time of entry into service
and during service or who has been a resident of this State for at least
one year.
According to the records of the S.C. Department of Veterans Affairs,
most of the qualifying children will attend a technical school at an
average cost of $1,000 per student. Last year 27 students were denied
free tuition due to the length of residency in this State. The cost would
be divided between various State Colleges and Technical Schools with
a slight increase in tuition anticipated for the following year.
