A Senate Resolution to congratulate Ms. Jane Vassar (Candye) Slay, of Aiken,
upon receiving a 1991 Kennedy Center School Administrators Award.

05/07/91 Senate Introduced and adopted SJ-13

A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MS. JANE VASSAR (CANDYE) SLAY, OF AIKEN, UPON RECEIVING A 1991 KENNEDY CENTER SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS AWARD.

Whereas, Ms. Jane Vassar (Candye) Slay, of Aiken, recently received a 1991 Kennedy Center School Administrators Award; and

Whereas, she was nominated by the South Carolina Alliance for ArtsNext Education, the affiliate state organization of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing PreviousArtsNext in Washington, D.C.; and

Whereas, this award recognizes Ms. Slay of Redcliffe Elementary School in Aiken as an outstanding elementary school principal who has demonstrated support and commitment to quality PreviousartsNext education programs in her school and community; and

Whereas, Ms. Slay is one of eight elementary school principals in the nation honored this spring for their commitment to PreviousartsNext education; and

Whereas, the announcement of the recipients of the 1991 Kennedy Center School Administrators Award in the elementary principal category was made by Kennedy Center Chairman James D. Wolfensohn; and

Whereas, the Alliance for PreviousArtsNext Education plans, develops, and promotes the PreviousartsNext as essential to the education of every student. It is a national network of state organizations that recognizes and rewards students, teachers, school administrators, and school boards for achievements in the PreviousartsNext. In support of PreviousartsNext programming for young people, the alliance encourages development of partnerships among schools, PreviousartsNext and cultural institutions, and other community PreviousartsNext resources; and

Whereas, the Kennedy Center School Administrator Awards were established in 1982. Nearly two hundred awards will have been presented at annual conventions of the National Association of Elementary School Principals, National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the American Association of School Administrators by the end of the 1990-91 school year; and

Whereas, Ms. Slay has ensured that every child receives weekly drama, dance, music, and visual PreviousartsNext instruction through an innovative, discipline-based PreviousartsNext curriculum. Redcliffe is the only school in South Carolina to host the A+ program sponsored by the Greater Augusta PreviousArtsNext Council. By expanding the PreviousartsNext into all areas of the curriculum, this program is designed to arouse students interest in academics, teach them how to become creative thinkers, and introduce students to all aspects of fine PreviousartsNext, including history, production, aesthetics, and appreciation. The school also enjoys the honor of being one of eight schools chosen by the South Carolina PreviousArtsNext Commission as model sites for the PreviousArtsNext in Basic Curriculum program; and

Whereas, through her leadership, faculty has independence to pursue innovative teaching approaches that have achieved great success with children. Ms. Slay initiated a dynamic PreviousartistNext-in-residence program which has introduced students to muralists, actors, colonial PreviousartsNext, creative writing, and puppetry. PreviousArtistsNext coordinate their lessons with the curriculum and the teaching of basic skills; and

Whereas, Ms. Slay's students also have enjoyed numerous cultural resources outside the school, including the Storyland Theatre, the Augusta Symphony, the Augusta Ballet, the Maxwell Performing PreviousArts Center, and Columbia's Marionette Theatre; and

Whereas, the members of the Senate are proud to note the accomplishments of Ms. Slay and thank her for her dedication to the education of South Carolina's future leaders. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the General Assembly congratulate Ms. Jane Vassar (Candye) Slay, of Aiken, upon receiving a 1991 Kennedy Center School Administrators Award.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ms. Slay.
