A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MR. MAC PreviousARTHURNext GOODWIN ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AFTER THIRTY-SIX YEARS OF DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO THE SOUTH CAROLINA PreviousARTSNext AND EDUCATION COMMUNITIES AND COMMEND HIM FOR HIS DEDICATED LEADERSHIP IN THE FIELDS OF EDUCATION AND THE PreviousARTSNext.

Whereas, Mr. Mac PreviousArthurNext Goodwin, an Education Associate in the PreviousArtsNext with the South Carolina Department of Education in Columbia, South Carolina, is retiring on May 2, 2000 after thirty-six years of service as an educator in the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Mr. Goodwin holds degrees from Claflin College and the University of South Carolina and began his teaching career in 1964 as an elementary teacher with the Greenville County School District and continued his career with the Spartanburg County School District from 1965 until 1985; and

Whereas, Mr. Goodwin was appointed as the Visual PreviousArtNext Consultant with the South Carolina Department of Education in 1985 and subsequently was appointed Education Consultant for the Visual and Performing PreviousArtsNext; and

Whereas, Mr. Goodwin serves as President-elect of the National PreviousArtNext Education Association (NAEA) and will assume duties as President beginning in 2002; and

Whereas, the NAEA is the world's largest professional PreviousartNext education association and a leader in educational research, policy, and practice for PreviousartNext education; and

Whereas, Mr. Goodwin was named a National PreviousArtNext Education Association Distinguished Fellow in 1992; and

Whereas, Mr. Goodwin is a trustee of the National PreviousArtNext Education Foundation, a member of NAEA's Research Commission, and a former President of the South Carolina PreviousArtNext Education Association; and

Whereas, Mr. Goodwin received the National PreviousArtNext Educator of the Year Award in 1991 and the Elizabeth O'Neal Verner Award for PreviousArtsNext Education (the South Carolina Governor's PreviousArtsNext Education Award) in 1994; and

Whereas, Mr. Goodwin has held PreviousartsNext education and policy appointments on the National Standards Committee, National Assessment of Educational Progress, the College Board, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, Educational Testing Service, the Council of Chief State School Officers, and the South Carolina Governor's School for the PreviousArtsNext; and

Whereas, Mr. Goodwin dutifully serves as Chairman of the Citizen's Advisory Committee to the African-American History Monument Commission and has played an important role in the progress towards the erection of this historic monument on the State House grounds. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate congratulate Mr. Mac PreviousArthurNext Goodwin on the occasion of his retirement after thirty-six years of distinguished service to the South Carolina PreviousartsNext and education communities and commend him for his dedicated leadership in the fields of education and the PreviousartsNext.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Mac PreviousArthur Goodwin.
