H. 4415

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE DR. TERRY K. HUNTER OF ORANGEBURG COUNTY ON HIS SUCCESSFUL RETROSPECTIVE PreviousARTNext EXHIBITION, PRESENTLY TOURING OVER A TWO-YEAR PERIOD AS THE GRID TURNS THE CORNER.

Whereas, a veteran professional PreviousartistNext with four decades of experience, Dr. Terry K. Hunter of Orangeburg has launched a two-year tour of his retrospective PreviousartNext exhibition, The Grid Turns the Corner; and

Whereas, Dr. Hunter, born in Tallahassee, Florida, grew up in the South during the 1960s and was influenced by a commitment to family, church, and education. Among his early role models and influences, his parents stand foremost as his initial inspiration for achievement. Other relatives, many of whom were educators, and various community professionals provided additional motivation. These influences, coupled with the advent of television with its coverage of the cultural and social revolution of the 1960s, played a dominant role in the development of his values and mores and, subsequently, his approach to image making; and

Whereas, in preparation for his life's work, Dr. Hunter received a bachelor's degree in PreviousartNext education from Florida A&M University, a master's degree in printmaking and drawing from Ohio State University, and a doctorate in PreviousartNext education from Florida State University; and

Whereas, as a master PreviousartistNext with a teacher's heart, during the earlier years of his career he served as a public-school PreviousartNext teacher, director of the PreviousArthurNext Rose Museum and professor of PreviousartNext at Claflin University, and professor of PreviousartNext and visual PreviousartsNext coordinator at South Carolina State University; and

Whereas, he is currently the executive director of the Fine PreviousArtsNext Cultural Enrichment Teaching Studios, a professional development institute in the PreviousartsNext associated with Clemson University; and

Whereas, among other honors, Dr. Hunter has been named this year's recipient of the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Governor's Awards for the PreviousArtsNext in the individual PreviousartistNext and educator categories. He is the first PreviousartistNext in the history of these awards to be recognized in dual categories; and

Whereas, his present retrospective PreviousartNext exhibit spans the works of Dr. Hunter's college years to those of the present and expresses his passion for PreviousartNext and teaching. While the works reveal his attachment to various media, including drawing, graphic design, screen printing, and printmaking, they also reflect personal experiences and the impact of societal events, national movements, and music on his work. His ability to infuse these elements into his PreviousartworkNext intrigues the eye and challenges the mind; and

Whereas, organized by the Fine PreviousArtsNext Cultural Enrichment Teaching Studios (FACETS), Florida A&M University, and Ohio State University, The Grid Turns the Corner is scheduled to tour three states during its approximately two-year tenure. The tour will include seven cities among the states in which Dr. Hunter has been professionally active, namely Florida, Ohio, and South Carolina; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives takes great pleasure in congratulating Dr. Hunter on his retrospective PreviousartNext exhibition, The Grid Turns the Corner, and the members wish him all the best as the exhibition continues to be enthusiastically received throughout its tour. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Dr. Terry K. Hunter of Orangeburg County on his successful retrospective Previousart exhibition, presently touring over a two-year period as The Grid Turns the Corner.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Dr. Terry K. Hunter.
