S. 1296

A SENATE RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE APPRECIATION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE FOR THE DISTINGUISHED CAREER IN PUBLIC SERVICE OF THEIR FRIEND AND COLLEAGUE SENATOR PreviousARTHUR RAVENELNext, JR., OF CHARLESTON, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE.

Whereas, PreviousArthur RavenelNext, Jr., has been a loyal servant of the State in many roles - as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1953-58, in the South Carolina Senate from 1981-86, in the United States House of Representatives representing South Carolina's First Congressional District from 1987-95, and most recently, in returning to the South Carolina Senate in 1997; and

Whereas, at age eighteen, in 1945, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served with distinction, after which he earned his B.S. degree at the College of Charleston in 1950; and

Whereas, in all of his public life he has exemplified the virtues of willingness, readiness, alertness, keen insight, and courtesy that have made him a superb legislator and won him loyal friends; and

Whereas, Senator Ravenel has understood the words "duty and loyalty" in their larger context and in their nobler adjuration, to listen quietly, to counsel wisely, and to keep confidences; and

Whereas, the esteem in which he is held and the affection that he generates is made obvious by the General Assembly acting to name the new Cooper River Bridge rising over Charleston Harbor in his honor as a tribute to his tenacity in pursuing its construction; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the Senate to pause in their deliberations in order to reflect on the career of this great son of South Carolina and bear in mind the old words from Ecclesiasticus, "Let us now praise famous men, and our fathers who begat us..... All these were honored in their generations, and were the glory of their times". Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express their appreciation for the distinguished career in public service of their friend and colleague Senator PreviousArthur RavenelNext, Jr., of Charleston, on the occasion of his retirement from the South Carolina Senate.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Senator PreviousArthur Ravenel, Jr.
