 OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF THE HONORABLE ARTHUR W. CHRISTOPHER, SR.,
 FORMER CHARLESTON CITY COUNCILMAN AND MAYOR PRO TEMPORE, AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST
 SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF THE HONORABLE ARTHUR W. CHRISTOPHER, SR., FORMER CHARLESTON CITY COUNCILMAN AND MAYOR PRO TEMPORE, AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the Honorable Arthur W. Christopher, Sr., Charleston City Councilman from 1975 to 1991 and Mayor Pro Tempore in 1978, died January 7, 2002; and

Whereas, he was a role model for all the citizens of the City of Charleston; and

Whereas, during his successful tenure on the Charleston City Council he introduced the resolution that declared Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday a legal holiday, fought to control the transportation of nuclear waste through the city, and was instrumental in the development of Waterfront Park, the city's Visitor Reception and Transportation Center, and Charleston Place; and

Whereas, he leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Mrs. Gertrude W. Christopher; three sons, Mr. Arthur Christopher, Mr. Myron Christopher, and Mr. Shelton Christopher; and a host of other relatives and many friends; and

Whereas, the State of South Carolina owes a debt of gratitude and a moment of remembrance for its former servant. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina do hereby express their sorrow upon the death of the Honorable Arthur W. Christopher, Sr., former Charleston City Councilman and Mayor Pro Tempore, and extend deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Gertrude W. Christopher.
