 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION TO EXPRESS THE SORROW OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL
 ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF JAMES ELMORE, SR., OF ORANGEBURG COUNTY AND TO
 CELEBRATE HIS VARIED CONTRIBUTIONS TO THIS STATE.

TO EXPRESS THE SORROW OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF JAMES ELMORE, SR., OF ORANGEBURG COUNTY AND TO CELEBRATE HIS VARIED CONTRIBUTIONS TO THIS STATE.

Whereas, James Elmore, Sr., of Orangeburg, South Carolina, died Sunday, February 24, 2002, at the age of seventy years; and

Whereas, his death leaves a huge void in the business, education, and service communities of Orangeburg and Calhoun Counties; and

Whereas, this self-employed Master Licensed Plumber of more than fifty years was a constant presence in the area, always greeting his customers and his many friends and acquaintances with his special smile; and

Whereas, he graduated from the Calhoun County public schools and the South Carolina Police Academy and later received the honorary Doctor of Human Letters degree from Claflin University, where he was a member of the Board of Visitors and of the Claflin Hall of Fame; and

Whereas, his long-standing support of that Methodist university served as a seed for the recent highly successful capital campaign conducted by Claflin; and

Whereas, James Elmore was a class leader and steward of Ebenezer AME Church in St. Matthews, a thirty-third degree Mason, and a prominent and vital figure in the various landscapes of Orangeburg and Calhoun Counties, serving as a role model for several generations of their citizens; and

Whereas, his greatest influence was felt in his love for his family, and he is survived by his wife, Dorothy Z. Elmore, daughters Ernestine E. Charleston and Harriet Teresa Elmore, son James Elmore, sister and brothers Susie Roberts, Murray Elmore, and Roosevelt Elmore, a niece raised in his home, Geneva E. Byrd, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly express their sorrow upon the death of James Elmore, Sr., of Orangeburg County and celebrate his varied contributions to this State.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Z. Elmore.
