A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND CHRISTIE NEWMAN BARRETT OF RICHLAND COUNTY FOR HER MORE THAN FIVE YEARS OF OUTSTANDING AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE AND STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA WHILE SERVING AS AN ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL, AND TO WISH HER GOOD HEALTH AND MUCH HAPPINESS IN ALL OF HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Christie Newman Barrett's distinguished legal career began in 1991 after graduating with honors and near the top of her class from the University of South Carolina School of Law; and

Whereas, for the next five years, Christie Newman Barrett worked with the prominent South Carolina law firm of Nelson, Mullins, Riley, and Scarborough, where she represented many of that firm's most prestigious clients in a number of their most complex cases; and

Whereas, to fulfill her strong desire to give something back to her beloved home State, Christie Newman Barrett left private practice to accept a position with the South Carolina Attorney General's Office in October of 1996; and

Whereas, as an Assistant Attorney General in the Government and Civil Litigation Division, Christie Newman Barrett quickly won the respect of her peers and the full confidence of her client agencies who relied on her daily to provide precise and timely advice regarding all facets of civil litigation; and

Whereas, in recognition of her immense talent and considerable initiative, Christie Newman Barrett was designated as either the state's lead counsel or second chair in virtually all of the office's major civil cases and other high profile projects; and

Whereas, the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina is particularly grateful to Christie Newman Barrett for her tireless efforts to protect some of our state's most vulnerable citizens from the predatory and unfair trade practices of such major corporations as Publishers Clearing House, American Family Publishers, and United States Publishing Corp., against whom she obtained favorable judgments and settlements on behalf of the State of South Carolina totaling in the hundreds of thousands of dollars; and

Whereas, it is only appropriate that the members of the House of Representatives pause in their deliberations to recognize such a distinguished daughter of South Carolina, and to express their heartfelt appreciation for a job well done. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commends Christie Newman Barrett of Richland County for her more than five years of outstanding and dedicated service to the people and State of South Carolina while serving as an Assistant Attorney General and wishes her good health and much happiness in all of her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Christie Newman Barrett.
