A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

HONORING THE MEMORY OF EDWIN ROBERTS RUSSELL OF COLUMBIA, ONE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S ABLEST AND MOST DISTINGUISHED LEADERS AND EXTENDING THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO HIS WONDERFUL FAMILY AND COUNTLESS FRIENDS.

Whereas, Edwin Roberts Russell of Columbia died on Easter Sunday, April 7, 1996, at the age of 82; and

Whereas, Mr. Russell was born in Columbia and was the husband of the late Dorothy Nance Russell, who predeceased him in 1994, and a devoted father to his daughter, Vivian Eleanor Russell Baker; and

Whereas, Mr. Russell received his B.S. degree with honors from Benedict College and his M.S. degree in chemistry from Howard University; he performed further graduate studies at the University of Chicago and was awarded an honorary doctorate degree by Benedict College in 1974; and

Whereas, Mr. Russell was a major contributor in the development of the atom bomb; research chemist at the University of Chicago Metallurgical Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory; Professor of Chemistry and Chairman of the Science Division, Allen University; contributing editor to the National Nuclear Energy Series at McGraw Hill; and was responsible for securing eleven United States Patents dealing with the Energy Program, i.e., Plutonium Separation Processes, Fission Product Recovery and Waste Decontamination; and

Whereas, he had an outstanding academic and research career; he was a research chemist at the DuPont Savannah River Laboratory in Aiken from 1953 until 1976, from which post he retired; he had several publications appearing in leading scientific journals from 1941 through 1976; and

Whereas, he received numerous awards and honors for his academic and research work and was recognized as a leader in his areas of endeavor; and

Whereas, he was active in many civic matters including serving as President of the Waverly Neighborhood Improvement and Protection Association, led the effort to include some homes in the Waverly Community on a national historic register, a member of Alpha Psi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and Alpha Iota Chapter of Sigma Pi Phi, and a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, where he earlier taught Sunday School and Bible Class; and

Whereas, Edwin Roberts Russell was loved, respected, and admired by all who knew him, and his presence will be greatly missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, wish to honor the memory of Edwin Roberts Russell, one of South Carolina's ablest and most distinguished leaders, and extend their deepest sympathy to his wonderful family and his countless friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his daughter, Vivian Eleanor Russell Baker.
