A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 53-3-150 SO AS TO DESIGNATE THE MONTH OF APRIL AS "CONFEDERATE HISTORY AND HERITAGE MONTH" IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, April is the month in which the Confederate States of America began and ended a four-year struggle for state's rights, individual freedom, and local government control; and

Whereas, Confederate Memorial Day on April 26, which is observed on the first Saturday in May in South Carolina, is a time when South Carolinians honor the brave men and women who served the Confederate States of America; and

Whereas, South Carolina has long cherished her Confederate history and the great leaders who made sacrifices on behalf of the Confederate Cause; and

Whereas, it is vital that all South Carolinians reflect upon our state's past and honor and respect the devotion of her Confederate leaders, soldiers, and citizens to the cause of Southern Independence. Now, therefore,

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 53-3-150. April is designated as 'Confederate History and Heritage Month' in South Carolina."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
