A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
EXPRESSING THE SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE
GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA
AT THE DEATH OF DR. JULIAN E. GRANT OF NEWBERRY
COUNTY, AND EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS
FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, Dr. Julian E. Grant of Newberry County died Monday,
February 17, 1997; and
Whereas, Dr. Grant was a prominent and highly-respected physician;
when he first came to the Town of Newberry in 1930, he offered
medical care for an underserved population; at that time, no hospital
served the African-American Community; in 1937, he founded
People's Hospital on Vincent Street in Newberry to meet the
community's needs; and
Whereas, Dr. Grant cared for anyone who needed assistance,
regardless of the person's ability to pay; he never asked for money
and often was paid for his services in vegetables, milk, or eggs; and
Whereas, Dr. Grant practiced medicine in Newberry for over fifty
years; he helped secure the grant that led to construction of the first
public housing in Newberry and worked with clients at the de-tox
center; he also helped many young people move into higher-ranking
positions with his recommendations; and
Whereas, he was a leader during the Civil Rights Movement and
acted as a peacemaker in the community -- a fact which earned him
the respect and admiration of both the African-American and white
communities; and
Whereas, for his countless contributions to the medical profession
and the community, Dr. Grant was presented the Order of the
Palmetto, the highest honor bestowed by the State of South Carolina;
and
Whereas, he was born in Bennettsville in 1900 and was educated in
the Florence County schools; he earned a B.A. degree from Claflin
College in 1925 and received his M.D. degree in 1929 from Meharry
Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee; he interned at General
Hospital Number 2 in Kansas City, Missouri, from 1929-30; and
Whereas he was married to the late Grace C. Funchess and is
survived by four children: Mrs. Grace Grant Gist of Greensboro,
North Carolina; Julian E. Grant, Jr., of Anderson; Mrs. Ruby Grant
Waters of Charlotte, North Carolina; and Arthur F. Grant of
Newberry; he is also survived by eight grandchildren: Marcus Grant,
Terry Grant, and Crystal Grant of Newberry; Dr. Herman Gist, Julian
Gist, and Orin Gist of Greensboro; and Grace Waters Ocasio and
Robert Waters of Charlotte; and
Whereas, Dr. Grant was a trustee of the Newberry Housing
Authority, which bears his name, a courtesy staff member of
Newberry County Memorial Hospital, a member of Miller Chapel
A.M.E. Church, a member of the American Medical Association and
of the South Carolina Medical Association, and a member of Alpha
Phi Alpha Fraternity; and
Whereas, Dr. Grant was a great humanitarian, an outstanding
physician, a true peacemaker, and a devoted churchman and family
man; he loved and was loved; he left his mark on his community; all
Newberrians mourn his death but, at the same time, rejoice in and
give thanks for the precious gift of his life and service. Now,
therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South
Carolina, by this resolution, express sorrow at the death of Dr. Julian
E. Grant of Newberry County and extend deepest sympathy to his
family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Dr. Grant's family.
