GOSPEL UPON HIS RETIREMENT AS PRESIDENT OF ALLEN UNIVERSITY.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO COMMEND DR. DAVID T. SHANNON FOR HIS
DISTINGUISHED CAREER AS A UNIVERSITY
ADMINISTRATOR, PROFESSOR, AUTHOR, AND MINISTER
OF THE GOSPEL UPON HIS RETIREMENT AS PRESIDENT OF
ALLEN UNIVERSITY.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly have learned with
deep regret that Dr. David Thomas Shannon will retire as President
of Allen University on June 30, 1997, after serving in this capacity
with distinction since 1993; and
Whereas, he has compiled an exemplary record of service in the field
of higher education that includes service as President of both
Andover Newton Theological School in Newton Centre,
Massachusetts (1991-1993), and Virginia Union University,
Richmond, Virginia (1978-1985), and Vice President for Academic
Services/Dean of the Faculty of the Interdenominational Theological
Center, Atlanta, Georgia (1985-1991); and
Whereas, Dr. Shannon has been a highly respected and greatly
admired minister of the gospel having served as pastor of Ebenezer
Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia (1960-1969), and Fair Oaks
Baptist Church in Fair Oaks, Virginia (1954-1957); and
Whereas, he earned both a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Bachelor
of Divinity Degree with honors from Virginia Union University in
Richmond, Virginia; an S.T.M. Degree from the Oberlin Graduate
School of Theology in Oberlin, Ohio; a Doctorate of Divinity Degree
from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee; a Doctorate of
Philosophy Degree from the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania; and a Doctorate of Divinity Degree from the
University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia; and
Whereas, Dr. Shannon is the author of numerous publications which
include, "The Bible in Our Changing Society", The Old Testament
Experience of Faith, and "Roots: Some Theological Reflections"; and
Whereas, he is the recipient of many honors and awards and is a
member of many professional and social organizations and serves on
numerous boards; and
Whereas, Dr. Shannon and his wife, Averett, are the parents of three
children and the proud grandparents of three grandchildren; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution,
would like to publicly recognize and thank Dr. David T. Shannon for
his loyal and dedicated service to South Carolina and our nation upon
the occasion of his retirement as President of Allen University. Now,
therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly commend Dr. David T.
Shannon for his distinguished career as a university administrator,
professor, author, and minister of the gospel upon his retirement as
President of Allen University.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to
Dr. David T. Shannon.
