REPRESENTATIVE JOHN SUMMER HUGGINS OF NEWBERRY COUNTY AND EXTENDING SYMPATHY
TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

RESOLUTION
EXPRESSING SORROW AT THE DEATH OF FORMER
REPRESENTATIVE JOHN SUMMER HUGGINS OF
NEWBERRY COUNTY AND EXTENDING SYMPATHY TO HIS
FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, former Representative John Summer Huggins of Newberry
County died March 17, 1998, at the age of seventy-one; and
Whereas, services were held for Mr. Huggins on March 20, 1998, at
Pomaria Lutheran Church and interment followed in the Summer
Family Cemetery; and
Whereas, Mr. Huggins was born in Newberry and graduated from
Pomaria High School, Newberry College, and the University of
South Carolina School of Law; he practiced law as a member of the
South Carolina Bar and the Bar of Newberry County; he served in the
House of Representatives for two years; he also served as counsel for
the South Carolina Department of Vocational Rehabilitation,
Disability Determination Division from 1955 to 1975 and thereafter
reentered the private practice of law in Irmo; and
Whereas, he was a lifelong member of Pomaria Lutheran Church,
having served as vice chair of the church council, as a Sunday School
teacher, and as chair of many church committees; he also served as
president of the Pomaria Ruritan Club, as an adult leader for Troop
76 of the Boy Scouts of America, and as attorney for the Town of
Peak; and
Whereas, he is survived by his wife, Doris Gunter Huggins; a
daughter, Nancy Huggins Wessinger; a son, John S. Huggins, Jr.; and
six grandchildren, Nathan and Leanna Huggins and Alyssa, Corey,
Matthew, and Kaylyn Wessinger; and
Whereas, it is our desire that the members of Mr. Huggins' family and
his many friends know that they are uppermost in our thoughts and
have our deepest sympathy. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this
resolution, expresses sorrow at the death of former Representative
John Summer Huggins of Newberry County and extends sympathy
to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
the Huggins family.
