A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
COMMENDING AND THANKING CHESTER J. TOMSON, JR.,
FOR HIS DEDICATED SERVICE AS COUNTY DIRECTOR OF
ORANGEBURG COUNTY AND EXTENDING BEST WISHES TO
HIM UPON HIS RETIREMENT FROM THIS POSITION, JUNE
30, 1998.
Whereas, Chester J. Tomson, Jr., originally of Asbury, New Jersey,
has for the past nineteen years served as County Director of
Orangeburg County; and
Whereas, Mr. Tomson will retire from this position on June 30, 1998;
and
Whereas, he worked for the South Carolina Department of Health and
Environmental Control from August, 1974, to December, 1974, and
at the South Carolina Department of Social Services in Sumter
County from January, 1975, until February, 1979, when he became
Orangeburg County Director; and
Whereas, he retired from the United States Air Force, where he
served his country faithfully from 1954 to 1974, as Master Sergeant
and Hospital Corpsman and Instructor in Aerospace Physiology; and
Whereas, he graduated from Washington High School in
Washington, New Jersey in 1954 and obtained his B.S. degree in
business administration from the University of South Carolina in
1971; he also attended Golden Gate University in San Francisco,
where he earned a master's degree in business administration in 1976
and a master's degree in public administration in 1977; and
Whereas, he is a devoted member of First Baptist Church of
Orangeburg, where he has served as Adult Sunday School Teacher
and as Deacon; he is also the former Brotherhood Director of the
Orangeburg Baptist Association; and
Whereas, he has had numerous organizational affiliations over the
years; among these affiliations are included the following: life
member, Optimist Club International (Past President, Vice President,
Secretary, and Treasurer of the Orangeburg Chapter); member,
Orangeburg Lions Club; South Carolina Association of Human
Services Administrators (Past President); Orangeburg County
Disabilities and Special Needs Board (Past Chairman); Edisto
Chapter, Habitat for Humanity (member and Past Chairman); Claflin
College Upward Bound (Advisory Board member); and Salvation
Army, Orangeburg County (member and current Board Chairman);
and
Whereas, his service to Orangeburg County as County Director has
been excellent, and the gift of his time, talents, energy, and resources
to the community in many other ways has been truly generous; he is
an outstanding individual, and we are pleased to have the opportunity
to accord him this special recognition. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this
resolution, commends and thanks Chester J. Tomson, Jr., for his
dedicated service as County Director of Orangeburg County and
extends best wishes to him upon his retirement from this position,
June 30, 1998.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Mr. Tomson.
