A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION TO OFFER THE SINCERE APPRECIATION AND SPECIAL THANKS
OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO ONE
OF THE PALMETTO STATE'S MOST OUTSTANDING AND DISTINGUISHED NUCLEAR CHEMISTS
AND HUMANITARIANS, MR. J. MALVYN (MAL) MCKIBBEN OF NORTH AUGUSTA, SOUTH
 CAROLINA.

02/03/00 Senate Introduced, adopted, sent to House SJ-7
02/08/00 House Introduced, adopted, returned with concurrence HJ-6

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO OFFER THE SINCERE APPRECIATION AND SPECIAL THANKS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO ONE OF THE PALMETTO STATE'S MOST OUTSTANDING AND DISTINGUISHED NUCLEAR CHEMISTS AND HUMANITARIANS, MR. J. MALVYN (MAL) MCKIBBEN OF NORTH AUGUSTA, SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, Mr. J. Malvyn (Mal) McKibben was a nuclear chemist at the Savannah River Site for almost forty-five years; and

Whereas, Mal McKibben loves North Augusta and is quick to tell you he would not want to live anywhere else in the world. Except for a brief business assignment in San Francisco, he has not lived elsewhere since 1955; and

Whereas, following his graduation from Emory University and moving to North Augusta, Mal McKibben quickly became involved in his community as a leader and business professional; and

Whereas, Mr. McKibben has been a long-time member of Grace United Methodist Church. He became a youth leader and was asked to teach Sunday School - to this day, he continues to teach a Sunday School class; and

Whereas, Mr. McKibben joined the church choir in 1955 and has been a member ever since. He has always believed in individual responsibility to use God-given talents. In that, God has used him to touch the lives of many thousands of North Augusta citizens who have been members or visited Grace United Methodist Church; and

Whereas, he is widely renowned as a nuclear chemist and his particular areas of expertise are now being used in critical national and international forums. Last year Mr. McKibben was named a "Fellow" of the American Nuclear Society. Nationally, only up to five fellows can be named each year. In making the nomination, Dr. Ken Ferguson said, "Mal has contributed sound technical judgment and some very vital dialogues on nuclear matters of national and international importance. His insights have enhanced nuclear technology decisions for five decades."

Whereas, following his lifelong commitment to using God-given talents and skills, in 1999 Mal McKibben entered a new phase of giving. Instead of simply retiring to pursue his love of saltwater fishing, he made the decision to become a key North Augusta-based ambassador and advocate for economically sound and environmentally safe nuclear science. In order to fulfill this commitment, he has become the Executive Director for the private nonprofit organization, Citizens for Nuclear Technology Awareness (CNTA); and

Whereas, Mr. McKibben will continue to serve on various professional committee assignments and consultations, taking him to places like Russia, where he and a group of American scientists have been working to build relationships, communications, and nuclear materials safety practices and accountability. Additionally, he serves as Vice Chairman of the American Nuclear Society's Planning Committee for a global nuclear sciences conference which will be held in Paris in September 2001; and

Whereas, in Mal McKibben's path through life, it has made no difference about one's social status, political influence, wealth or lack thereof - this deserving servant of God has touched many lives with his generosity and compassion. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, offer their sincere appreciation and special thanks to one of the Palmetto State's most outstanding and distinguished nuclear chemists and humanitarians, Mr. J. Malvyn (Mal) McKibben of North August, South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. J. Malvyn (Mal) McKibben.
