 FORMERLY UNITED STATES MAGISTRATE FOR FLORENCE COUNTY, ON HER ASSUMPTION OF
 THE BENCH OF THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND EXPRESSING
 THE PRIDE OF THE STATE'S CITIZENS ON THIS MOST RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENT OF A TRUE
 RENAISSANCE WOMAN.

CONGRATULATING THE HONORABLE MARGARET B. SEYMOUR, FORMERLY UNITED STATES MAGISTRATE FOR FLORENCE COUNTY, ON HER ASSUMPTION OF THE BENCH OF THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND EXPRESSING THE PRIDE OF THE STATE'S CITIZENS ON THIS MOST RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENT OF A TRUE RENAISSANCE WOMAN.

Whereas, The Honorable Margaret B. Seymour, formerly a United States Magistrate in Florence County, was sworn in as United States District Court Judge on October 30, 1998, in Columbia; and

Whereas, the oath was administered to Judge Seymour by South Carolina's Junior Senator Fritz Hollings after the full Senate confirmed her nomination by President Bill Clinton; and

Whereas, both Senator Hollings and the state's Senior Senator Strom Thurmond echo the praises of Judge Seymour's friends, family, and colleagues who describe her as even-tempered, fair, courteous, knowledgeable, and ethical; and

Whereas, Judge Seymour becomes the first African-American female federal judge in the state's history; and

Whereas, this achievement is just the most recent in a life-long pursuit of excellence, beginning with earning the undergraduate degree in English literature from Howard University and the law degree from American University, both in her native Washington, D.C.; and

Whereas, she has been in the private practice of law, has acted as counsel and adviser for the United States Department of Education and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and has served as head of the civil division of the United States Attorney's Office and was selected twice by Attorney General Janet Reno to serve as acting United States Attorney; and

Whereas, she is married to attorney Joseph Dawson Shine, and is the proud and loving mother of a grade schooler and a doctorate of philosophy candidate; and

Whereas, she runs forty to fifty miles a week while training to run in one of the twelve marathons she has completed, including the past five Boston runs, and thirty to thirty-five miles a week when not in training; and

Whereas, this true Renaissance Woman also works out with weights, kayaks and sails, cooks, and reads "anything she can get her hands on"; and

Whereas, her consistent excellence in her various and varied pursuits have prepared her for this new task requiring both wisdom and humanity. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly do hereby congratulate The Honorable Margaret B. Seymour, formerly United States Magistrate for Florence County, on her assumption of the bench of the United States District Court in South Carolina, and express the pride of the state's citizens on this most recent accomplishment of a true Renaissance Woman.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to The Honorable Margaret B. Seymour.
